Side Roads
Small roads, quite doors-stories that deepen the Crossroads without changing the main road.
What are Side Roads?
Side Roads are the stories you don’t need in order to follow the main books—but once you’ve walked them, the world feels wider. Some take you backward into Crumb’s earlier years. Some move sideways into other hands, other hearths, other roads. They’re quieter by design: craft, community, winter light, and the way ordinary days become sacred when you look back. Read them in any order, or use the guide below.
"Every crossroads has paths you don't notice at first—the ones that lead to a neighbor's garden, or circle the long way round to somewhere you already were. "

Side Road ~ 50,000 words
Crumb’s Year of Apprentices is a full Side Road told in twelve quiet steps — a year in the bakehouse before sunrise, before the counter, before the world knew what it was looking at. It follows Crumb and three apprentices through ordinary mornings, difficult customers, small mercies, and the kind of craft that becomes a way of living.
Features Crumb · Takes place 5 years before Book I
Reading Order Note
There isn't one. These paths are meant to be wandered, not followed. If you haven't read the main books yet, you're welcome here-though some doors will open wider once you know what's on the other side.
